Famke Janssen Confirms Marvel Has Not Invited Her Back as Jean Grey

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Famke Janssen confirmed that Marvel has "never ever" asked her to return as Jean Grey, a character she first portrayed in the "X-Men" franchise beginning in 2000. Despite her iconic status in the role, focusing on her tenure in the Fox-era superhero films, Janssen has stated she is often questioned about her potential return.
This statement follows a history of discussions surrounding legacy characters within comic book adaptations, particularly the X-Men. Previously, in September 2021, Hugh Jackman announced his own return as Wolverine in "Deadpool 3." This event highlighted Marvel’s current trend of revisiting familiar characters while expanding their cinematic universes.
Janssen portrayed Jean Grey across multiple films in the franchise, including "X2: X-Men United" (2003) and "X-Men: The Last Stand" (2006). According to records, her last appearance as the character was in a cameo role in "X-Men: Days of Future Past" (2014). After this, there has been no official communication from Marvel about bringing her back.

Sources say the consistent queries about her potential return reflect the nostalgia fans have for the earlier X-Men films. Similar scenarios occurred in 2020 when the original cast of "The Fantastic Four" was frequently approached regarding a potential reprise as Marvel began rebooting their cinematic universe.
Janssen's statements emphasize the ongoing interest in older superhero franchises amid significant shifts in Marvel’s focus. Many original actors are either re-engaging with their past roles or are engaging in new projects; for example, Halle Berry recently joined the cast of "Moonfall" (2022) while still being recognized for her role as Storm.
Looking ahead, Janssen is currently set to appear in the series "The Binge" (2023), scheduled for release later this year. This film is part of her ongoing exploration of different genres beyond traditional superhero roles.

The X-Men franchise has historically seen actors return in various capacities, such as Patrick Stewart reprising his role as Professor X in "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" (2022). However, with Janssen's lack of an invitation to return, it remains uncertain how Marvel will proceed with the Jean Grey character moving forward.
As fan interest in nostalgia-driven projects continues to grow, it is uncertain whether Marvel will reach out to Janssen in the future. However, the significance of casting iconic actors from the original films remains a pivotal topic among industry discussions regarding franchise longevity and audience engagement.
